“Bhagavat-dharma is not so narrow gauge; it is broad gauge and wide elevator.” Morning darshan, 13th April 2007, Nabadwip. (now with upgraded sound quality, reader’s guide and podcast link)
“Be clean and clear and serve with pure devotion.” (Sripat Bamunpara, 26th March 2007)
Rough transcript (reader’s guide) for today’s lecture:
Hare Krishna! In young age when we was village preacher, that time, studying Bhagavat and preaching Bhagavat, in the meeting, and some discussion, discourses happening, after fifty years I am seeing that book, and I surprised to see that. Not forgot anything, but something slokas, little little forgot. What is Bhagavat Dharma? That was question to Narada Risi . . There was . .
kavir havir antarīkṣaḥ
prabuddhaḥ pippalāyanaḥ
āvirhotro ’tha drumilaś
camasaḥ karabhājanaḥ
(SB 11.2.20-21)
SGM: Nine . . .Yogendra, nava yogendra. First question’s answer given (by) kavir, then havir, then antarīkṣaḥ, then prabuddhaḥ, then pippalāyanaḥ, then
āvirhotro, etc. Here, very nice question, nice answer… fully dedicated life and when it is service life, fully dedicated, there many things, scriptural rules and regulation they cannot follow. Not ugly, all ugly they are avoiding, but when they are following, with full dedication then Krishna not giving any offence. Once, Srila Guru Maharaj, I cannot remember, Maharaj maybe remember, it is written in tape. Once Guru Maharaj make little wrong with Srila Saraswati Thakur . . .
Goswami Maharaj: Deity installation?
SGM: Oh, ah! maybe put Tulasi, and, I cannot remember that is, or other any offence, but answer I understand, answer I remember. When Guru Maharaj apologise, maybe that Deity installation matter, every time we are making Deity installation, doing Deity installation, and so many formalities we are following, for whom? For very junior devotee you can say, they are not experience or ripe or old, they are very junior, for their mental satisfaction – they may be grhasta, brahmachari, vanaprastha – [for] their mental satisfaction, we are doing some fire sacrifice, we are doing some Bhagavat pat, Gita pat, Veda pat, etc., etc., many things. But in the time of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, that not was necessary, all decoration with devotion they are doing to the Deity, and after that Srila Prabhupad going inside and putting some Tulasi into the lotus feet of Krishna, Mahaprabhu, and putting Tulasi in the hand of Radharani, or something something doing. But Prabhupad doing, giving Tulasi to the lotus feet of Krishna and Mahaprabhu, then paying dandavat, there (on the altar) half dandavat, and coming out, open door, and full dandavat doing, that is installation of Deity finish. That was.
06:52
Then one, maybe it is in Dakha or somewhere . .
Goswami Maharaj: Too high . . .
SGM: Too high, simhasana, Prabhupad will get, maybe . .
Goswami Maharaj: Strain himself . . .
SGM: Strain himself, for that Guru Maharaj make inside all decoration, everything and Guru Maharaj put Tulasi also. But Tulasi putting, Tulsa giving Prabhupad himself and Deity open, and that is installation finish. But that time, Guru Maharaj thinking Prabhupad will get much strain to go too high and give Tulasi to the Deity, then Guru Maharaj given Tulasi then finish, and Prabhupad taken Tulasi and wants to give that, and have seen there Tulasi already given. . .
Goswami Maharaj: And said, that, telling everyone that Deities installed themselves . .
SGM: Yes, and come out, pay dandavat and told, in lecture, here Deity Himself manifested. Then Guru Maharaj was very scrutinisingly hearing everything, and ‘Deity Himself here manifested’, this word touch Guru Maharaja’s heart, and he is thinking why Prabhupad told this? Then he feel and understand, maybe this is the cause, ‘I given Tulasi’ for convenience of Prabhupad, but every Deity installation Prabhupad giving Tulasi and instalment happening. But here I given, then Prabhupad have seen the Deity already installed, and he paid dandavat and told this in his lecture, “Here is automatically Deity installation happen.”
Anyhow, this was the procedure in the time of Prabhupad. Ah, then Guru Maharaj when understand, must be this is the cause, then he told to Srila Prabhupad, “Prabhu, I have done little wrong, please forgive my offences. I do not know you are putting the Tulasi. I know you are putting Tulasi and installation, but I tried to help you. It is Deity existing in high place and you will get little strain or something, and I do not wants to give you that, then I put Tulasi also, but I cannot feel that time, but now I understand the fact, then [for] my offence I am apologising to your Divine Grace.”
But answer Prabhupad given, that is my factor here – “Saranagater kokhona, aparadha haya na” (who is the surrendered, fully surrendered soul, he have no offence, and you have no offence for that) Prabhupad Saraswati Thakur given this answer?
Goswami Maharaj: Yes, and Madhava Maharaj said “Oh, such a high certificate you’ve been given from Prabhupad!”
11:46
SGM: Yes! Saranagater kokhona aparadha haya na . . this is very important for everyone. If we are really surrendered to Guru, to Krishna, offence we are always doing, wrong something we are always doing because we are not expert. We do not know everything, courtesy, etc. Something happening always… we are doing parikrama, written there ‘with shoe, not to do parikrama’, but many doing with shoe I am seeing. I not told them they will be hitted by something, stone etc., many things and that will be cause of his service lost. He will stay in their room for repairing his leg, for that, but there is written I have seen. And someone following, someone not following. Anyhow, this type of offensive some, we are doing…
13:52
…always doing. And necessary to be qualified, and quality will come through surrender. And that Prabhupād Saraswatī Ṭhākur told to Guru Mahārāj: “You don’t worry. You are surrendered soul, surrendered to Kṛṣṇa. You have no offence.” We are also thinking that, Bhāgavat-dharma, it is not so narrow gauge. It is broad gauge and wide elevator. That’s called Bhāgavat-dharma. Before we are discussing about this so many way, so many things. And today I open this book and have seen that every śloka .
ye vai bhagavatā proktā upāyā hy ātma-labdhaye
añjaḥ puṁsām aviduṣāṁ viddhi bhāgavatān hi tān
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.34)
Kṛṣṇa Himself told, “I like samosa and rasa-gulla.” Then no problem. If you give one samosa, one rasa-gulla, He will be very satisfied. Otherwise, if another anything you will give, he not will be satisfied Ye vai bhagavatā proktā: Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa said, to get His mercy, that is Bhāgavat-dharma. And another śloka is more strong.
yān āsthāya naro rājan na pramādyeta karhichit
dhāvan nimīlya vā netre na skhalen na pated iha
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.35)
He can go straight, no problem will come to him if he is fully surrendered to Lord Kṛṣṇa. And with a mood of service to Lord Kṛṣṇa. And different kind of service mood, it is listed in the scriptures, specially śānta, dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya, madhura, five kind of rasa, śānta, dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya, madhura. And He is the akhila-rasāmṛta-mūrtiḥ, [accept?] that, so many rasa: hasya, adbhuta, vīra, karuṇa, raudra, bhībhatsa, bhay, etc. Twelve gauṇa and five mukhya. Principle and . . .
Janaradan Maharaj: Secondary. Principle five, and then secondary . . .
SGM: Yes. Then here is mentioned, dhāvan nimīlya vā netre na skhalen na pated iha, He will proceed with open or close eyes, that is not question. If he will proceed in the way of Bhāgavat-dharma, he will get his destination, [Aviśrita?] sthān, desirable place in the transcendental world. So many things I am seeing. And Śrīmad Bhāgavat, twelve canto, and that twelve part of the body of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, it is mentioned.
pādau yadīyau prathama-dvitīyau
tṛtīya-turyau kathitau yad-ūrū
nābhis tathā pañchama eva ṣaṣṭhau
bhūjāntaraṁ dor-yugalaṁ tathānyau
kaṇṭhas tu rājan navamo yadīyo
mukhāravindaṁ daśamaṁ praphullam
ekādaśo yasya lalāṭa-paṭṭaṁ
śiro ’pi tu dvādaśa eva bhāti
(Padma-purāṇa)
That twelve canto, twelve part of the body of Lord Kṛṣṇa. And there another śloka added, that is dhyāna-mantra of Śrīmad Bhāgavat, that dhyāna mantram, meditation:
tam ādidevaṁ karuṇā-nidhānaṁ
tamāla-varṇaṁ suhitāvatāram
apāra-saṁsāra-samudra-setuṁ
bhajāmahe bhāgavata-svarūpam
(Padma-purāṇa)
This way, meditation on the tamal:
kṛṣṇe sva-dhāmopagate dharma-jñānādibhiḥ saha
kalau naṣṭa-dṛśām eṣa purāṇārko ’dhunoditaḥ
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 1.3.43)
It is like sun. Kṛṣṇa when left this world, sva-dhāmopagate, when Kṛṣṇa went His own place, then what happen? Śrīmad Bhāgavat appeared, divine form of Kṛṣṇa within twelve canto, with religion, proper religion, with proper knowledge, etc., and devotion, full devotion, dharma-jñānādibhiḥ saha, and clean devotion also, full and clean devotion. Devotion: karma-miśra, jñāna-miśra, that kind of devotion also indicated or noted, but it is clean devotion, fully surrendered soul practising. And that religion written in the Śrīmad Bhāgavat. Then, this age of Kali-yuga very bad quality and nature.
21:50
kaler doṣa-nidhe rājann
asti hy eko mahān guṇaḥ
(Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam: 12.3.51)
Kali is doṣa-nidhi, means full of fault, like ocean, fault of ocean, and everything opposite of religion, irreligion. And that is attacked with every entity, by influence of Kali. Doṣa-nidhe, ‘nidhi’ means ocean.
But one is very very good quality for that. That is religion of Bhāgavat-dharma. And that Mahāprabhu given instruction, real Bhāgavat-dharma, practitioner first two things is very essential for them: śravaṇ kīrtan. That is the real thing. Here I wrote. Mahāprabhu told that śloka, and here I, what? Exposed? No?
Mahananda Prabhu: Displayed . .
SGM: Yes. I displayed that śloka. At least first quality. It is first quality. This is not the highest quality. Minimum qualification. What that minimum?
jñāne prayāsam udapāsya namanta eva jīvanti
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.14.3)
Which way jīvanti? San-mukharitāṁ bhavadīya-vārtām. Anywhere, sthāne sthitāḥ, anywhere can stay, śruti-gatāṁ tanu-vāṅ-manobhir. You are ajita, no one can control You; no one can defeat You, but by the devotion of that kind of devotee You happily given Your mercy to them, and becoming defeated by them. Ajiti ’pi jita: no one can defeat, by the devotion, that kind of devotion can defeat You, and You must be merciful to them, high merciful, highly.
Anyhow, this kind of discourses, sixty years before maybe happen, or fifty years before. That I am reading
kāyena vāchā manasendriyair vā
buddhyātmanā vānusṛta-svabhāvāt
karoti yad yat sakalaṁ parasmai
nārāyaṇāyeti samarpayet tat
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.36)
Everything necessary to offer to Kṛṣṇa, then with His remnants we will [be] alive. Then no problem. Yesterday, Vṛndāvan Dās Ṭhākur’s disappearance day. For remembrance of Vṛndāvan Dās Ṭhākur, we offer to the Deity bhoga, and taken that mahāprasādam happily, tasteful, not bad. And we are satisfied with mahāprasādam. I do not know how you are satisfied or not yesterday? But I have seen so many things they make. Maybe they given me little more because I am not eating. Ha ha ha.
27:34
ānukūlyasya saṅkalpaḥ prātikūlyasya varjanam
rakṣiṣyatīti viśvāso goptṛtve varaṇaṁ tathā
(Śrī Chaitanya-charitāmṛta Madhya-līlā 22.100)
This is also one kind of rules and regulation. What is favourable for your health, that kind of prasādam you try to eat. Not to disturb Kṛṣṇa, not to disturb devotee. This is procedure given Śrīla Rūpa Goswāmī Prabhu to us: ānukūlyasya saṅkalpaḥ. What is favourable for your health, that kind of prasādam you try to take. Anyhow, three kind of devotees’ identification given here in Bhāgavatam:
sarva-bhūteṣu yaḥ paśyed bhagavad-bhāvam ātmanaḥ
Havir (of the nine yogendras) given that answer
bhūtāni bhagavaty ātmany eṣa bhāgavatottamaḥ
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.45)
Who is looking everywhere Kṛṣṇa’s presence, he is uttam bhāgavat.
īśvare tad-adhīneṣu bāliśeṣu dviṣatsu cha
prema-maitrī-kṛpopekṣā yaḥ karoti sa madhyamaḥ
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.46)
And he is the madhyam bhāgavat who is thinking Īśvar and His devotee, īśvare tad-adhīneṣu, bāliśeṣu dviṣatsu cha. Īśvare prem, Tad-adhīneṣu maitrī, bāliśeṣu kṛpā, and dviṣatsu cha upekṣā. Four kind of behaviour who is doing properly, he is second grade devotee.
And third grade devotee:
archāyām eva haraye pūjāṁ yaḥ śraddhayehate
na tad-bhakteṣu chānyeṣu sa bhaktaḥ prākṛtaḥ smṛtaḥ
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.47)
It is necessary to explain widely, then you will understand more, but I think so you read also this part of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. Actually, what we are doing discourses, everywhere Śrīmad Bhāgavat is present, and Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā is present, and our Guru-varga is present there. Not only Bhāgavat, not only Gītā, with that, sādhu, Guru, also presence there. It is always influenced in life of devotee. Then no problem coming.
You read Bhāgavat or not to read, that is not a question. If you get a good devotee’s association, good Guru’s association, good Vaiṣṇava’s association, then always you will be benefitted. But necessary to be clean and clear. Otherwise, everything dirtiness cannot be appropriate for your practising life. Be clean and quiet. And I am very happy to see that our all the devotee, very clean, quietly practising.
But more attentive nature and spirit necessary for everyone. More. More. Until … ‘until’ not here word, actually, forever, that is necessary. Be clean and clear and serve with pure devotion. Pure devotion’s have two example, one Rūpa Goswāmī given, one Nārad Goswāmī given:
sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaṁ tat-paratvena nirmalam
hṛṣīkeṇa hṛṣīkeśa-sevanaṁ bhaktir uchyate
It’s given by Nārad Goswāmī.
anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam
ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānuśīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā
This given Rūpa Goswāmī.
And Prabhupād Saraswatī Ṭhākur in Bengali written poetry:
āsakti-rahita sambandha-sahita
viṣaya-samuha sakali mādhava
śrī-hari-sevāya yāhā anukūla
viṣaya baliyā tyāge haya bhula
Anukūlyasya saṅkalpaḥ, this śloka.

Slokas from today’s lecture (with translations coming later today):
ye vai bhagavatā proktā upāyā hy ātma-labdhaye
añjaḥ puṁsām aviduṣāṁ viddhi bhāgavatān hi tān
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.34)
Even ignorant living entities can very easily come to know the Supreme Lord if they adopt those means prescribed by the Supreme Lord Himself. The process recommended by the Lord is to be known as bhāgavata-dharma, or devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
yān āsthāya naro rājan na pramādyeta karhichit
dhāvan nimīlya vā netre na skhalen na pated iha
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.35)
O King, one who accepts this process of devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead will never blunder on his path in this world. Even while running with eyes closed, he will never trip or fall.
kṛṣṇe sva-dhāmopagate dharma-jñānādibhiḥ saha
kalau naṣṭa-dṛśām eṣa purāṇārko ’dhunoditaḥ
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 1.3.43)
This Bhāgavata Purāṇa is as brilliant as the sun, and it has arisen just after the departure of Lord Kṛṣṇa to His own abode, accompanied by religion, knowledge, etc. Persons who have lost their vision due to the dense darkness of ignorance in the Age of Kali shall get light from this Purāṇa.
.
kaler doṣa-nidhe rājann
asti hy eko mahān guṇaḥ
(Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam: 12.3.51)
My dear King, although Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: Simply by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom.
jñāne prayāsam udapāsya namanta eva jīvanti
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.14.3)
Those who, even while remaining situated in their established social positions, throw away the process of speculative knowledge and with their body, words and mind offer all respects to descriptions of Your personality and activities, dedicating their lives to these narrations, which are vibrated by You personally and by Your pure devotees, certainly conquer Your Lordship, although You are otherwise unconquerable by anyone within the three worlds.
kāyena vāchā manasendriyair vā
buddhyātmanā vānusṛta-svabhāvāt
karoti yad yat sakalaṁ parasmai
nārāyaṇāyeti samarpayet tat
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.36)
In accordance with the particular nature one has acquired in conditioned life, whatever one does with body, words, mind, senses, intelligence or purified consciousness one should offer to the Supreme, thinking, “This is for the pleasure of Lord Nārāyaṇa.”
ānukūlyasya saṅkalpaḥ prātikūlyasya varjanam
rakṣiṣyatīti viśvāso goptṛtve varaṇaṁ tathā
(Śrī Chaitanya-charitāmṛta: Madhya-līlā, 22.100)
“ ‘The six divisions of surrender are the acceptance of those things favorable to devotional service, the rejection of unfavorable things, the conviction that Kṛṣṇa will give protection, the acceptance of the Lord as one’s guardian or master, full self-surrender, and humility.
sarva-bhūteṣu yaḥ paśyed bhagavad-bhāvam ātmanaḥ
bhūtāni bhagavaty ātmany eṣa bhāgavatottamaḥ
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.45)
Śrī Havir said: The most advanced devotee sees within everything the soul of all souls, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Consequently he sees everything in relation to the Supreme Lord and understands that everything that exists is eternally situated within the Lord.
īśvare tad-adhīneṣu bāliśeṣu dviṣatsu cha
prema-maitrī-kṛpopekṣā yaḥ karoti sa madhyamaḥ
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.46)
An intermediate or second-class devotee, called madhyama-adhikārī, offers his love to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is a sincere friend to all the devotees of the Lord, shows mercy to ignorant people who are innocent and disregards those who are envious of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
archāyām eva haraye pūjāṁ yaḥ śraddhayehate
na tad-bhakteṣu chānyeṣu sa bhaktaḥ prākṛtaḥ smṛtaḥ
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.2.47)
A devotee who faithfully engages in the worship of the Deity in the temple but does not behave properly toward other devotees or people in general is called a prākṛta-bhakta, a materialistic devotee, and is considered to be in the lowest position.
sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaṁ tat-paratvena nirmalam
hṛṣīkeṇa hṛṣīkeśa sevanaṁ bhaktir uchyate
(CC Madhya 19.170, Nārada-pañcharātra.)
“ ‘Bhakti, or devotional service, means engaging all our senses in the service of the Lord, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of all the senses. When the spirit soul renders service unto the Supreme, there are two side effects. One is freed from all material designations, and one’s senses are purified simply by being employed in the service of the Lord.’

(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 1.1.11, CC Madhya 19.167)
“ ‘When first-class devotional service develops, one must be devoid of all material desires, knowledge obtained by monistic philosophy, and fruitive action. The devotee must constantly serve Kṛṣṇa favorably, as Kṛṣṇa desires.’
āsakti-rahita sambandha-sahita
